DESCRIPTION

Although available for several years, the P90X ® Extreme Home Fitness Training System saw a significant increase in popularity last year when singer Sheryl Crow attributed her sleek physique to the product. Suddenly commercials for the P90X hit the TV waves and questions about its effectiveness poured in. It is clear from the commercial that this product is not an exercise system for beginners or those who have been sedentary. (these people are encouraged to try the less intense Power 90 Program first). Make no mistake about the dedication it takes to get results.

This program, which includes 12 English-only DVD workouts ranging in length from 60 to 90 minutes, takes a lot of motivation and time. . Included are workouts for certain parts of the body (e.g. chest and back, shoulders and arms, abs), cardio and kenpo (martial arts-inspired movements) in the form of interval training, stretching and yoga. A detailed fitness plan schedules workouts based on individual goals.

BOTTOM LINE 3.0/5

By promoting the concept of "muscle confusion" to speed up results, you go from one exercise to another very quickly, which necessarily increases the risk of injury. In fact, even the extras on the DVD are starting to show signs of fatigue and do the exercises poorly. Unsurprisingly, Tony Horton's “coach” solution to participant fatigue consists of a range of dietary supplements, shakers and bars. The practice of upselling is nothing new, but the recommendations to drink their shakers and take their bars can be abusive.

We found that those who were able to stick to the program for the recommended 90 days were generally satisfied with the results. They attribute the improvement in their fitness levels to the variety and structure of the workouts, as well as the convenience of working out at home. In addition, the effects of this method are long lasting, the actual progress and exercises are changeable as needed.
Instructions are given to perform a preliminary work-up to determine the appropriate levels of resistance and intensity, as well as tips used in practice sessions that encourage participants to work at their own pace and take breaks as needed. Even with this record, only people who are already in good physical condition should try this program, as most of the exercises are at very advanced levels and the workouts are intense.
As advertised, the P90X is a program of intense exercise which can produce results, but which we recommend for people who are already in good physical condition because the training program is heavy. The intensity and "dedication" required can be overwhelming for those who are less fit or who don't have time to work out 60-90 minutes a day. We encourage people with physical limitations (or those who are sedentary) to choose a more appropriate program.
